Just northwest of this location is the center of the Tintic Caldera. Geologic evidence indicates that sometime during the Oligocene a huge volcanic explosion resulted in the formation of a crater 8.5 miles in diameter and 3,000 feet deep. Later volcanic activity has filled this crater, but 3,000 foot drill holes bring up evidence of its existence.
